Our 2017 Food Trend Predictions

The year is coming to a close, and we are looking to all the great things the new year has to offer. As true foodies we’ve scoured the internet, shopped the local markets, and checked out restaurant menus to come up with our predictions for 2017 food trends. See what we were able to come up with:

1. Minimizing food waste by utilizing ALL parts of the vegetable.

Sustainability and minimizing all waste are topics that are currently trending, and we think this focus will carry through into the food department. This means you’ll be seeing the incorporation of parts that normally get discarded such as veggie tops, leaves, or roots into recipes like salads, stocks, soups, and broths. Salad greens are no longer limited to iceburg, romaine, kale and spinach. Utilizing every part of the veggie means getting creative with the greens on top of your veggies (think beet greens, mustard greens, and carrot greens).  

2. Fermented foods

This was a big trend in 2016, and we are pretty sure these gut-friendly foods are here to stay for another year. Think kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir, and sourdough. These fermented foods are full of healthy probiotics that may be linked to healthier digestion.

3. Vegetarian Main Dishes and Comfort Foods

It looks like vegetables are beginning to move into the spotlight! Restaurants and chefs are using plants such as jackfruit in place of meat in burgers, curries, and tacos and customers are literally devouring these delicacies! Keep your eye out for veggie-focused restaurants and menu items in your area.

4. Bowls!

The acai bowl gained popularity, then we were eating bowls of broth, and now it seems we are eating just about everything out of a bowl. We have a feeling more restaurants will be jumping in on the bowl trend, and you can too!! Serve up a thick smoothie in a bowl with your favorite toppings, layer roasted vegetables over rice for lunch, or enjoy a delicious soup. If it’s in a bowl, it’s in style.

5. Healthy foods made convenience style

It’s no secret that everyone is very busy, and it doesn’t look like things will be slowing down in 2017. Good news, healthy foods are getting more convenient! We have seen quinoa in a cup, salad greens packaged with all the toppings Q-Cups, packaged greens, squeeze pack nut butters,, and hummus in a squeeze bottle. These products all make eating healthy just a little bit easier.

6. Functional Foods

A functional food is a food that possibly has a health benefit beyond the traditional basic nutrients offered. The most popular functional food we have seen popping up all over the place is turmeric, and we think it’s going to stick around in the new year. This bright yellow spice makes an appearance in many Asian dishes, but what makes this spice shine is the compound curcumin which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.   How can you start noshing on the bright yellow stuff? Find it in curry dishes, try adding it to homemade soups, put a dash on popcorn, or even sprinkle a touch of it on apple slices. Make sure to always include black pepper when eating turmeric because that helps your body utilize the curcumin to it’s max potential.
