The Basics of Gratitude Journaling

Everyone from health and wellness gurus to Oprah tote the benefits of keeping a gratitude journal. And for good reason — gratitude journals have been shown to improve your mood, lower stress levels and help you focus on what really matters in life. As busy students juggling multiple responsibilities, it can be easy to become stressed out or to lose sight of our big picture goals. Starting a gratitude journal can help you focus on where you are in your life, what you have to be thankful for and where you want to go.

Here are a few quick tips to get you started:

  1. Pick a fun/pretty/inspiring journal to use. 
  2. Set aside a small amount of time each day to reflect on what you are thankful for.
  3. Place your journal somewhere you will see it every day. Your nightstand is a great place, especially if you write at night.
  4. Aim to write down 5-10 things you are grateful each day. They can be as simple or as deep as you’d like them to be.
