What was the workload like?
At least 4 community service events completed outside of "work hours" (ie must be in evening, weekends)
Major project Oct-May
What was the workload like?
case studies, research projects, multiple assignments per rotations, and many many many many other little things that just took time
What was the workload like?
Each intern has a "major project" to work on all year. We develop the project in conjunction with a preceptor. We also have assignments from each rotation and four exams throughout the year.
Describe your rotations and other professional experiences (field trips, seminars, workshops or professional conferences).
available Most were 1-2 week rotations. Most are within the hospital. Some clinics away from the hospital, but in Charlottesville (ex: renal clinic). UVA has a nutrition support team that covers all floors/services in the hospital if the patient is on nutrition support; you spent 4 weeks with the team. During each rotation you had homework assignments or projects to be completed away from the hospital. These were typically due at the end of the rotation, however not always. 2 Weeks patient services
2 weeks non-patient services: visitor cafeteria, catering
2 weeks advanced managment.
With food service, the nice thing about the rotations were you were considered management and you spent most of your time completing projects. Meaning, you were NOT in the kitchen or on the tray line all day. Each about 1 week, included typical settings: Adult senior centers, Charlottesville City Schools, Retirement home, WIC, etc. I chose to complete my 1 week elective rotation in Richmond with a private practice RD who specialized in eating disorders. You were free to choose what setting and where to complete the rotation. You also got to choose where you would like to complete staff relief as well as extended experience rotations.

Describe where you lived during the internship and how you found housing.
I was not the typical intern. Although recently a college grad, I got married right before the internship. I lived with my husband in Richmond VA (about a 60 minute commute one way).

The areas closer to the hospital are a little more "sketchy" because it's right downtown Charlottesville, but there are some newer apartments in the area that are pretty nice. My place was about 2 miles from the hospital, but the commute during rush hour was crazy. So the benefit to living downtown was the ability to walk to work.
Why did you choose to apply to this program?
It was a clinically based program in a large TEACHING hospital. I really was not that interested in community nurition and the rotations for that are minimal. I also liked that it was a teaching hospital; it made it more comfortable to ask doctors/residents/interns/nurses questions because they are used to teaching other students.
Why did you choose to apply to this program?
UVA's internship program focuses on clinical experience, which I was interested in. The class size is 10 interns, which is large enough to learn from fellow interns, but not too large to take away individual learning experiences. I was impressed by the program's website and the positive reviews from previous interns. Although I had never been to Charlottesville, VA, I heard from many people that it is a great little city. Having a love for the outdoors and outdoor activities, Charlottesville seemed to be a good fit for me.
Why did you choose to apply to this program?
I chose UVA because it was a close drive from my house so I was able to commute without relocating. I was also interested in UVA because it was clinical based and that was the type of internship concentration I was looking for.

Why did you choose to apply to this program?
Strong clinical and pediatrics focus
Why did you choose to apply to this program?
clinical rotations, reviews, strong pediatrics
Why did you choose to apply to this program?
I wanted a program that was strong in clinical nutrition. A teaching hospital also offers more learning experiences that you can get from other programs.
